Bega is the CBD of the Sapphire Coast. The home of Local Government, Health, Education, Finance and Shopping, home and origin of Bega Cheese the regions largest employer.
Set in a valley at the junction of the Bega and Brogo rivers and surrounded by rich dairy country, Bega is a handsome, historic town that's the rural centre of the Sapphire Coast and gateway to the lush Bega Valley.
The traditional inhabitants the Djiringanj, Thaua, Bidawahal and Ngarigo tribal groups comprised the Yuin–Monaro nation in the area now known as the Bega Valley Shire. For many thousands of years Bega was known as a "Big Beautiful Camping Ground" Yuin communities living in coastal areas are known as the Katungul, from the word ‘Katung’ which means the sea.

Today Bega is home to 5,052 people, settlement of the area dates from the early 1830s, with land used mainly for cattle grazing and farming. Growth took place from the 1850s into the late 1800s as dairy farming became the dominant industry and the township of Bega developed. Bega became the main commercial and administrative centre in the Bega Valley Shire.
